I've been spending a lot of time in my office.
I’ve been keeping myself honest which is why it’s pretty quiet on the blog. Here’s a rundown of what I’ve been up to that’s appropriate to share.
Conferences
June is going to be a hugely busy month. The following are (mostly) confirmed (and yes, I’m only talking June for now — there’s potentially more conferences this year):
- Innovations in eLearning Symposium – Fairfax, VA
I’ll be presenting at a session on the Architecture of Actualization - Games + Learning + Society – Madison, WI
Rumor is I’m keynoting but it’s not posted yet (I did say *mostly* confirmed); this will be a speech focused on The Architecture of Actualization, but pointed more towards serious games and mobility — and probably more use-cases since that’s easier to (ahem) swallow… with a lunchtime keynote. - mLearnCon - San Diego, CA
Nothing is posted about this conference either, but if keynoting is an ante up from my usual participation, then this must be the double-down at mLearnCon. I’m organizing/moderating a mLearning Future Camp and it will be exactly as awesome as that sounds. More details forthcoming, but there’s a superstart line-up organizing as I type.
Internet Radio
Two very different things I have going so far. First, I’ve now been a panelist on a discussion that’s sponsored by The Gap called Connecting Inner Power with Global Change. Host Pravir Malik is the author of a book by the same name, Each week, there’s a core panel that discusses a chapter out of the book, and it’s getting out of the set-up which is very “heady” and starting to get into the practical examination and application of how you create the change you want to see in the world. This book resonates a lot with me, and I’m fascinated by how Malik ties in Eastern and Western philosophies with Fractal geometry and economics. There are great insights into leadership, so if you’re doing any kind of leadership training, even if this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you might want to give the show a listen.
Far more approachable and hopefully as exciting is that my own longtime radio show Radio Gen1us has introduced a new format for music talk. We still have the mixtapes, but now we’re kicking out a Skypecast every two weeks, the first of which is available now. They last an hour, they’re much easier to do (certainly easier to edit) and a lot of fun.
Reading
Since I can’t hear of late, I’ve been a rockstar reader, capturing copious notes at Readernaut. If you haven’t joined Readernaut, check out the notes I’m taking on the books I’ve been reading and create an account, because every note is a post waiting for response in a discussion format. When you follow people reading the same book as you, you get their notes in your feed, too. That is some seriously interesting social reading.
Writing
Just for kicks, have you seen the lyrics for my rap, ADDIE’s a methodology (not design)?
I need to see more pictures of your office setup. You likin’ the green? I’m remodeling mine in three weeks, need some ideas. Mainly just installing a AC unit and painting, then more shelving (for more books!) and slight change in layout.
I had a reading plan last year that I completely failed. I’m hoping you’re inspiration + Readernaut + regained focus will = knowledge increase.

I’m not loving the green, but I’m not hating it. I can’t think of another color I would really love, but my wife really likes the color, and that’s how we bought the house, so until I have a more passionate idea for color, the green/chartreuse works. It’s pleasant enough. It’s definitely nice with the sunlight during the day.
That widescreen shot is the office. It’s small. I have a little oil heater I plugged in to keep it warmer through this winter. I’m hoping I won’t need to install an air conditioner this summer, but perhaps I’ll have to get a window unit.
Readernaut, and willfully putting it out there that I’m sharing my notes on my reading, is kinda the same approach as me sharing my workouts and meals — it’s keeping me (somewhat) honest. Plus, at least I can see where I”m progressing with my reading.
Oddly, I’m making better access on the paper books than I am the kindle books on my iPhone. Well, maybe not oddly. It’s a lot easier size/format to read and highlight.
I’m anxious to start knocking out some reading and annotating with the iPad. I hope they make that awesome.
