CREDO… and how they’re going to help me get my iPhone">CREDO… and how they’re going to help me get my iPhone

Suzy’s not normally the kind of gal that gets too active in the realm of technology acquisition. I think it’s more than safe to say that I’ve dragged Suzy (at times actually kicking and with some screaming) into getting a cell phone once we had Logan.

It’s been my plan now to get the new iPhone when it comes out. I wasn’t even going to consult about the decision having done all the research on how we could easily and affordably do it. But today Suzy presented me with an opportunity that will save us a hunk of change, and do some common good at the same time.

There is a new (?) new cell
phone/service through CREDO mobile (a division of Working Assets- the
people who do the free Ben and Jerry’s ice cream with long distance
service and give money to non-profits via credit card dividends).
Anyway, they are offering:

  • FREE ultraslim Sanyo Katana II camera phone ($249 value)
  • FREE activation and shipping
  • They’ll cover your early termination fee with your current service provider (up to $200)
  • Donations to progressive nonprofits (no extra cost); supporting a company that calls itself the “greenest phone company”

I’m currently sold on the covering the early termination fee. Suzy’s number is already out of contract and we can cancel at any time. My number has another few months. I was going to give her my current phone and cancel her current phone. Then, pick up the iPhone for myself and when the T-Mobile contract ends, switch. But… if Suzy does this, she can take over my line and get us out of T-Mobile completely. The cheapest calling plan through CREDO is $29.99 a month and that still includes unlimited nights and weekends.

We’re thinking… I’m leary of what else they might charge for.. like if they’ll charge you to get the picture off of your phone or not or some stupid crap like that. But it’s interesting.

FWIW, we don’t have any real issues with T-Mobile, but I don’t want to sign us up for more long-term commitments than we need to have, and renewing with T-Mobile is only a two-year deal, which isn’t worth it to me.Technorati Tags: , , , , sanyo katana II

  1. Hmmm…now you’ve got me thinking too…

Here’s the Customer Agreement, be sure to read it thoroughly, then tell me what it says :-) .

You’re locked into a two-year commitment with these calling plans. It doesn’t list what the early termination fee might be, nor does it address what you can or can’t do with pictures or video you capture with the phone. I know some plans only allow you to send pictures with mms, like you can’t sync or download them to a computer from the phone, which sucks. Some services, I’ve heard (but don’t know) even block services like Flickr’s API.

So, before we sign up, I just want to know eyes-wide-open what the deal is. There’s enough known about the iPhone that I at least understand the pain spots.

O, if only T-Mobile had better data speeds and the phone I crave.

Tmobile with 3G and iPhone = almost perfect.

Did you see Verizon’s plans for 4G?

  4. Are you assuming that you jailbreak your iPhone, or are you able to get service via CREDO otherwise? I’d love to switch, myself!

I’m in a unique situation where my wife’s phone is already off contract and I have a few months left on mine, so basically my wife will finish out my old contract or use CREDO to eliminate it — and I get the new iPhone. Everyone wins.

Oh, OK, I thought you were getting an iPhone to also work on the CREDO account. But you’re actually getting your wife on CREDO while you get on AT&T. Got it.

    • You’re not going to be able to put the iPHone on Credo. As far as I understand, Credo is run by Sprint, which is (has been) incompatible with AT&T.

You’d be better off going with T-Mobile if you want to open up an iPhone. I know a number of people who’ve done that.

  9. Yea… it seemed like a long shot to jailbreak an iphone to CREDO. But still, wouldn’t you have to sign up for a lengthy, expensive contract with AT&T to even BUY the iPhone? And then from that point, how would you get it onto the Tmobile network? THanks!
